Apparently in addition to music, Peter is quite the painter and photographer. Very nice work all around. Also, I’m very curious about the “new music” he’s apparently working on.

Myths & Misconceptions About Grid Systems

Myths & Misconceptions About Grid Systems:
AisleOne responds to the now infamous WebDesignerDepot article:

A grid should never define a design, it should work with it. To suggest that a grid can hinder creativity is the same as suggesting that a music tempo can as well. A grid is a building block that can never, and should never, impede creativity.

As you might imagine, I had my own set of problems with the WebDesignerDepot article when I read it last week and AisleOne has addressed all of them and cleared up the confusion. As you know, I’m a huge fan of the grid layout in graphic design and share Jason Santa Maria’s initial response to the article “Saying that grids get in the way of creativity shows you don’t understand how to use a grid.” Enough said.

Jez Burrows is a designer and illustrator who appears to have a...

Jez Burrows is a designer and illustrator who appears to have a strong interest in infographics.
As people become increasingly comfortable with drawing their culture from a rich range of sources—cherry-picking whatever makes sense to them—it becomes more natural to do the same thing with their social, political and other cultural ideas. The sharing of art is a precursor to the sharing of other human experiences, for what is pleasurable in art becomes thinkable in life.

"And though I ebb in worth, I’ll flow in thanks."

““And though I ebb in worth, I’ll flow in thanks.””

- John Taylor

The Story of the High Line:

Built in the 1930s, the High Line was an elevated railway cutting through New York’s Meatpacking and West Chelsea districts. Since the last train ran in 1980 nature has taken over - wild flower seeds have blown in, grasses and trees have naturalised.

There is a difference between being arrogant about yourself as a person and being confident that your work has some value. The first is unattractive, the second is healthy and natural. Some people respond to the one as if it were the other. Don’t confuse them. Marketing is not bragging, and touting one’s wares is not evil. The baker in the medieval town square must holler “fresh rolls” if he hopes to feed the townfolk.

Terrific article from Zeldman on promoting your work. I’ve always enjoyed trying to get my name out there and networking with other people through my website, blog, and other social media tools. This quote is exactly how I’ve always felt:

This may sound Jedi-mind-trick-ish, but never create a blog or a Twitter feed with the explicit idea of promoting yourself. Create for the joy of creating. Share for the joy of the sharing, and because the information you’re sharing genuinely excites you. Do that, and the rest will follow.

Simple as that.

Rebranding Playboy

Rebranding Playboy:
Alex Cornell over at the ISO50 blog details the process of his most recent school project. The project was to rebrand a dead or dying brand and Alex chose Playboy magazine:

I imagined a Playboy comprised solely of articles, devoid of nudity (or images of any kind) — something that people would have no choice but to read. In the same way it was regarded as progressive and irreverent in the past, so too could it be now, with an effective and drastic restructuring. Strangely enough, the boundaries Playboy pushed back in the 60’s have now come to be relatively standard operating procedure for men’s magazines. A drastic change, such as eliminating nude spreads altogether, would be one of the ways Playboy could once again be on the forefront exciting editorial content.

His concepts, designs, and ideas are nothing short of brilliant and I can’t wait to see the finished product.

The Big Picture has some images from the National Geographic...

The Big Picture has some images from the National Geographic International Photography Contest today.
With all my optimism for stories and travel, just the opposite is valuable to me: becoming comfortable with one place, so the micro act of becoming a regular has become something of a casual study. When is it that someone moves from the informal visitor to the recognized regular? And how does one maintain regular status?

It’s interesting she published this article now because I’ve been involving myself in my own private study the past few weeks. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I stop at a coffee shop on my way to class. I usually order a medium mocha with whole milk. I decided I wanted to see long it would take before I could walk in and they would know I was going to order a medium mocha with whole milk.

Well, last Thursday I stopped in because I had some extra time and I just wanted a regular coffee (I usually don’t go on Thursdays, mind you, and I’m ordering something different) and the barista exclaimed “You don’t want your medium mocha!” It made my day.

Understanding Your Brain For Better Design

Understanding Your Brain For Better Design:
An interesting article on left brain versus right brain and how understanding these can make you a better designer or artist.

AOL unveils new logo

AOL unveils new logo:
What the heck?
